A Southeast Alaska favorite, these dramatic, regal towers of flowers bloom in a range of blue hues from the inky navy to a light powder blue. A favorite of pollinators, a few of these are a great way to attract bee and hummingbirds. While tall growing, delphiniums have hollow stems and benefit from being planted out of the wind and being staked before the plants begin to elongate. In our soils they need annual doses of lime. They are perennials that will come back for 2 or 3 years, but will eventually need to be replaced. One of the more poisonous garden flowers, if you have any livestock make sure to keep them well away from your delphiniums.
