Japanese Maple, Katsura

Extremely popular, this is a Japanese maple that must be seen to be believed. Early spring, the Katsura will begin unfurling its leaves. Because of Southeast Alaska’s false-start springs we recommend keeping it wrapped until you’re confident the frosts have passed. The Katsura almost seems to develop in reverse from what we often expect from foliage. Coming out in bright yellow, and turning chartreuse, before finally becoming green for summer! It’s early life will be vase-shaped but as Katsura ages it will balloon into a large, round shape obscuring its own trunk almost completely until every year you are looking at nothing but a massive mass of magnificent foliage.
